“ I was already pretty boss before. Now I'm totally boss and then some more! I'm livin' the upgrade!” - Jake in The Play[1]

Character Description[]

Jake Dillinger is the ultimate high school cool guy: handsome, popular, a star athlete from a very rich family but, has trouble reading. He has everything going for him. Or at least that's how he seemed to most people. However, he lacks empathy and is arrogant about his own status ("Dude, the freak's freaking out", in response to Jeremy being in pain). His parents are both criminals on the run for laundering money so he lives on his own as a teenager, possibly leading him to distract himself with extracurriculars. [2] He also mentions to Christine Canigula that he feels a lot of pressure to be perfect all the time.[3]

About[]

He joined the theatre club, which led to him dating Christine. This made him an antagonist in Jeremy Heere's eyes. However, at his Halloween party, she broke up with him.

At the Halloween Party, Rich Goranski ends up burning down Jake's house. While trying to escape, Jake breaks both of his legs and is later seen with two leg casts starting from his feet to mid-thigh and a pair of crutches.

Trivia[]

  • Jake is a part of theater club, Frisbee-golf club, archery club and, Model UN (although he eventually quit the archery club to have more time for theater club and hanging out with Christine).
  • He held a Halloween party at his house, which was considered "the biggest party of the Fall". By the end of the party, his house was burned down by Rich.
  • In the fire, he was hospitalized and broke both of his legs.
  • It was allegedly revealed that Jake broke his legs trying to save Rich from the fire after the original run, though, after being asked about it, Joe Tracz said he never said anything along those lines. It was finally revealed in the off-Broadway reboot that Jake got hurt attempting to escape the fire by jumping out of a window.
  • He was given a Squip during the song "The Play," letting him walk on his broken legs without feeling pain.
  • Joe Iconis has stated that Rich and Jake would "make some beautiful short babies"
  • Jake and Rich have a height difference
  • Jake's sexuality has never been revealed, however, most fans seem to think that he is pansexual. Rich, who is commonly shipped with Jake, has been confirmed as bisexual.
  • Jake mentions in Upgrade that his parents are out of town because they committed a crime: "My parents won't be home; So its alright; They laundered money; Now they're on the run"
  • According to Joe Tracez, when answering a question about Jake having abandonment issues, "I think there is a reason why Jake feels the need to keep himself busy with dozens of extracurriculars. And why he feels he has to 'be the best, at everything, all the time'"
  • His squip may be Air Bud or James Vanderbeek depending on which member of the cast you ask.
  • Jake is simply a variant of Jack, which is slang for Man. Dillinger doesn't mean anything in any other language, however (according to Google Translate) in Chinese Dilling (or Dīlíng as it is properly spelled) means "young age" apparently. And "er" is just a suffix meaning is, so Dillinger just basically means child. Therefore Jake Dillinger basically just means "man child"
  • He rocks at pool and possibly had sex with Madeline according to More than Survive "So Jenna Roland said Madeline told Jake; I'll only have sex with you if you beat me at pool; And then she lost at pool; Deliberately; That is so awesome; Brooke!; I mean slutty; And then Madeline was all like-;" and "Jakey D!; So what's the story with Madeline?; Oh man, I shouldn't say; But it's a good thing I rock at pool!"
  • At the 10th Anniversary Concert, Mr. Reyes said that Jake was absent from the Middleborough High School Reunion because he followed in his parents' footsteps and fled the country for money laundering.
